Sae Yeoun Hwang (b. 1994) is an artist based in London. She received her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2020. Her work often begins with a personal impulse—an emotion, a memory, or a bodily sensation—and expands into fragmented narratives that resist linearity. Through painting and text, she navigates states of in-betweenness: between cultures, identities, languages, and emotional registers. Exaggerated expressions and stylised gestures appear throughout her practice, not for spectacle, but as a way to access what feels too complex or too quiet to name directly. Pain, discomfort, and absurdity coexist in her images, often layered with a strange tenderness.
